Important Things You Should Know

  1. AT&T PAYG SIMs will only work in the USA, Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries.
  2. In the USA you pay to both make and receive calls. If you do not have any credit you will be unable to receive calls.
  3. Tethering and portable hotspot features are not supported.
  4. There are international calling plans that provide cheap calls to australian landlines.

SIM Activation and Registration

Activating Your SIM Card

Before you head overseas, you will first need to activate your SIM on the AT&T website. You can do this in Australia before you depart, and at the end of the process you will be given your USA phone number. The plan will commence as soon as you add sufficient credit (e.g. if you are on the $25/month plan it will commence as soon as you add $25). If you do not add sufficient credit within 24 days the SIM will be automatically cancelled and you will not be able to use it again.

You should use a high speed Internet service (not 3G mobile Internet) to complete the activation process.

Once activation is complete you will receive a 4 digit PIN number (last 4 digits of the phone number). If you try to use this to create an online account it will send new new PIN via SMS which you cannot receive until you get to the USA as the SIM only works in USA/Canada/Mexico. To top up before you depart see instructions in the add credit section below.

Start Click here to go to the AT&T SIM Activation Page, enter the 20 digit number on your SIM Card and click continue.

Step 1 - About Your Phone
Enter any US ZIP Code and the EMEI number of your phone (it does not have to be the EMEI number of the phone you will be using). You can search for a ZIP code here and you can get the EMEI number for your phone by dialing *#06# or by looking in your phones settings. Alternatively you can use the numbers below: Zip Code: 27893 - Wilson, NC EMEI: 355310043132160 (A spare phone from our office).  Write down the ZIP Code you use, you will need this if you need to talk to AT&T support.  Once this is done click continue

Step 2 - Personal Information
Enter your email address twice. You can populate the other fields, but it is not required. Once this is done click next.

Step 3 - Rate Plan
The plans that you can choose from is dependent on if you have a smartphone or not. AT&T's definition of a smartphone is not specifically stated anywhere, but from our general observation it is any phone that will be used for data (includes all Apple, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phones). AT&T will try to tell if you are using a smartphone based on the EMEI number you provide, however if it is unable to tell (e.g. if you use the EMEI Number provided above) you will get the option to select (See screenshot below).

If you select Smartphone you can select from the plans listed below. We recommend the $60/month plan which includes unlimited calls/SMS in the USA and 4GB

If you select Basic (Quick Messaging) you will get the plan options below. Please note that AT&T will cancel your account if you try to use a lot of data on one of these plans with a smartphone. The best plan depends on the duration of your stay and how much you intend to use your phone, however typically we would recommend the $25/month plan if you don't plan to use your phone a lot or the $50/month unlimited plan if you intend to use it a lot.
The following describes how the plans work.
Calling, messaging and data services are available only if your account balance is sufficient to cover the applicable rate plan charge. Rate plan charges will automatically be deducted every 30 days from your account balance. Plan and any pay-per-use services will be unavailable if account balance is insufficient to pay rate plan charge on renewal date or until enough money is added or rate plan is changed to another plan. All packages are good for 30 days as long as your account balance is not expired. Standard rates apply if package is not renewed after 30 days.

Once you have selected a plan click next.

Step 5
Review your information and click submit.

It is recommended that you double check that the 20 digit SIM Card Number is correct before submitting. After you click submit you will be automatically redirected to a page providing the status of you activation. Please ensure you are using a high speed internet connection to undertake the activation process as low speed connections (e.g. using a mobile with tethering) will time out.

If you are getting errors, please also try to use a different web browser. If you are still having trouble, send an email to support@mobipassport.com with your SIM Number (89..), Postcode and EMEI Number (if not the one listed on our website) and the plan you want the SIM activated on.

Finally you will be automatically redirected to a page confirming your activation and providing your new phone number (wireless number) and a PIN. Make sure to write down your phone number as it is not sent via email and very difficult to obtain from AT&T customer service.  If you are redirected to the AT&T homepage, restart your browser and try the activation again.  Normally on the second attempt you only need to enter your SIM number and ZIP Code.

You will require a new PIN which is sent via SMS to access the AT&T online portal, but unless you are in Canada you will not be able to receive the SMS to access the online portal before you arrive in the USA.

Once your SIM is activated we recommend you add credit using Ding.com (see instructions below). If you need to make any changes to your plan, add credit or add a data plan before you depart you can do this by calling AT&T customer service on (+1) 800-901-9878.

Please note that these SIMs will not connect to a network outside the USA, Mexico and Canada. Once this is completed your SIM will be activated, however if you activated on a monthly plan it will not commence until you add enough credit to cover the cost of the plan. We recommend you add credit using Ding.com (see below) before you depart.

Having Trouble?

If you are having trouble completing the activation process, click here to submit your details to us and will try to do it for you.

Adding Credit and Packages

The SIM does not come pre-loaded with any credit, as so you will need to add credit before you can use it. If you activated on a monthly plan, the plan will commence (or recommence) as soon as you add sufficient credit to the account. Below are the options for adding credit.

Do not enroll in auto-refill.  We recommend you add credit using ding.com (Formally ezetop.com) as this is the easiest option and will ensure you are not automatically billed monthly.

 Add Credit before you depart

You can use the following options to add credit before you depart (i.e. while still in Australia)

1. Top up using DIng.com(Formally Ezetop.com) - Credit Loaded directly to you SIM Top ups of $15,$20, $30 and $40 can be made through Ding. Ding.com is a third party service provider, so you will need to go to the DIng.com website to complete the transaction. If you need to add more than $40 (e.g. for the $60/month plan), then you can make multiple top-ups (E.g. $30 + $30) using the Ding service, however for new accounts they will only allow 1 top-up in the first 48 hours so you will need to make the top-ups over two days.

Adding credit through Ding (Formally Ezetop).  What to do:

Step 1. Follow This link to the Ding website -> Add Credit Now
Step 2.
Register to create a Ding account. You will be required to validate your details via email.
Step 3. Select the country (United States of America) and then enter your phone number with a +1 (USA Country Code) at the start (e.g. +12522222222).
Step 4. Select Network (AT&T) and the Top-Up Amount. You can also choose to send a SMS confirming the credit is added (You will not recieve this until you arrive in the USA) and then click Next
Step 5.
Enter your credit card details and the address details associated with your credit card and click Pay.
Step 6.
If the top-up is successful, you will receive a notification on the screen saying that your SIM has been credited. Your credit card will not be charged unless the top-up is successful. There is also the option to have an SMS sent to your phone, however you will not receive this until you get to the USA.

2. Add Credit over the phone by dialing AT&T customer service on (+1) 800-901-9878 (You can use an Australian Credit Card, but only if you speak to a customer service representative). If you do this follow the instructions below to speak to an operator, as the automated service for adding credit assumes you are using a USA credit card and will request a USA zip code.

  • Dial 611 or (+1) 800 901 9878 and do the following to get put through to a customer service representative:
  • When the call commences press '0' to bypass the information on your plan and AT&T offerings
  • After pressing '0' say technical support at any time
  • You will be asked if support relates to a go phone account and say 'yes'. You will then be put through to a representative.
  • Calls to 611 or (+1) 800 901 9878 are free from within the USA.
Adding Credit while in the USA

1. You can instantly add credit to your AT&T SIM online using Ding.com (See instructions above). (Recommended)
2. You Can purchase credit through any AT&T store or at one of 200,000 retail outlets, convenience store, petrol stations, etc. that sell credit throughout the USA.

3. Add Credit from the AT&T online portal or by dialing 611 or (800) 901-9878 (You can use an Australian Credit Card, but only if you speak to a customer service representative).
